Fire breaks out at Birmingham’s Wholesale Market
Forty firefighters spent more than an hour tackling a fire at Birmingham’s Wholesale Market.
The fire has been contained to the market and involves a number of wooden pallets in two units out of 80.
No injuries were reported and the fire was later brought under control, according to West Midlands Fire Service.
Police closed Pershore Street at the Upper Dean Street junction while fire crews dealt with the blaze.
Gareth Morris, inspector for Birmingham city centre, said emergency services did not think anyone was trapped inside the buildings.
Initially West Midlands fire service said it was sending three fire engines to the scene, but that was quickly increased to eight as the scale of the blaze and its location became clear.
On scene at the Birmingham fire we now have an ambulance, a paramedic area support officer & the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team. “Thanks to locals + shoppers for patience”.
The market covers a 21-acre site with 235 stalls inside selling fish and meat as well as warehousing.
