Obama won’t apologize for likening R
During a speech at American University on Wednesday, Obama said Iran will be more capable of building a nuclear weapon if the deal is blocked and a military solution will only drive its nuclear development deeper underground.
Republicans said the deal leaves wiggle room for Iran to cheat.
Earlier at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Iran, Corker asked a lead U.S. negotiator of the deal, “Why now will you not give us the documents that exist that are so important to all of us relative to the integrity of this?”
While Republicans bristle at the idea of portraying them as for another war in the Middle East, Sen. The only alternative, they say, is military action against Iran.
“It would be destructive both to the US and to Israel“, Obama warned.
North Korea is now a nuclear power with deadly weapons capabilities. “But we can set them back to day zero”.
“Let’s not mince words”.
“It was not a reassuring meeting”, Corker told reporters after the meeting in Congress with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano on Wednesday.
Hoenlein said that Israeli officials should make the case against the accord “on the content, on the substance, and we will do the job of translating it into activity”. “You’ll see Hezbollah rockets falling on Tel Aviv.’ This is what he said would happen if the U.S. had a military strike on Iran”, Rosenbaum said, referring to the Iranian-backed Lebanese guerrilla group and its long-range missile arsenal. Obama has promised to veto such a resolution by Congress. The House and Senate then would have 10 days to vote on overriding a veto.
One of the challenges regarding the debate, he said, is the need “to keep the issue at the forefront for another eight weeks”.
He also made the case that despite the prime minister’s objections, the deal is the best way to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapon that would pose a much more dire threat to the Jewish state.
The administration, he said, “suggests that any criticism of this deal is tantamount to a call to war”.
Obama sought to win over wavering Democrats in Congress before he heads off for a two-week holiday to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and as senators join their House colleagues on an extended August recess.
Democratic Reps. Mike Thompson of California, Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Mark Pocan of Wisconsin also announced their support.
The normally circumspect Obama sharpened his speech to a knife’s edge at several points, mocking what he called “armchair nuclear scientists” on TV and accusing some critics of “knee-jerk partisanship”.
Under the deal, Iran will significantly reduce its stockpile of enriched uranium and centrifuges.
Organizers said 10,000 people – not taking into account expected group audiences – had signed up to view the webcast.
