Jets’ Geno Smith Has First Turnover, But Is Showing Signs Of Progress
Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN New York says the injury likely occurred during an impressive catch by Devin Smith.
But the news that he’s avoided throwing any interceptions is indeed a positive, because you only have to go a little bit north in the state of New York to see a third-year quarterback who has made absolutely no progress.
The Jets’ were already planning on Smith missing the majority of training camp with the injury, but it now appears as though the ailment may force the second-round draft pick to miss the Jets’ Week 1 contest against the Browns. While Smith’s status wasn’t immediately clear, it is now.
In his first two seasons in the NFL, turnovers have been a major problem for Smith.
Per the team, Smith was being held overnight in a hospital as a precaution. “They took him inside to stretch him”. I think that’s something that’s going to help: getting the ball out and to the receivers a little faster.
The Jets are coming into the season with high expectations after signing back Darrelle Revis and hiring Bowles and training camp will be very important for the new head coach. I tried to chase him down and he tried to cut back. Pretty good value, even if we don’t know whether or not he can play. Wilkerson, due to make a guaranteed $6.97 million, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Smith seems to only be good at making big plays, but we don’t know if he can do that at the NFL level obviously.
“I don’t think he’s spinning probably as much as I was”, Smith said, referring to his experiences as a rookie two years ago. So the way I handle it is just do better, keep a better grip on the ball.
Cromartie also was asked how successful he believes the Jets can be this season if Smith’s improvements translate to the field. Now, the defense allows for more pressure on the quarterback and uses speed to counter the runs.
