U. of Cincinnati shooting puts spotlight on campus police
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters scoffed at Tensing’s claim that he was dragged by DuBose’s vehicle, saying the officer “purposely killed him”. He was freed at about 6:30 p.m., county sheriff’s spokesman Mike Robison confirmed.
“Ladies and gentlemen! This is a courtroom”, the judge said sharply. He was indicted Wednesday in the July 19 shooting of 43-year-old Samuel DuBose, of Cincinnati, during a traffic stop.
Terina Allen, DuBose’s sister, said that the body camera video footage showed that her brother was innocent and his shooting was unjust.
Mathews says Tensing has felt “like he’s been run over by a train from the start of this case and it continues”.
Tensing, 25, was fired quickly after he was indicted. He has a UC degree in criminal justice.
DuBose’s death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers. But authorities have not focused on race as a factor in the slaying.
A prosecutor says a grand jury decided no charges are warranted against two University of Cincinnati police officers who responded to the traffic stop in which another officer fatally shot a driver.
Kidd and his trainee, David Lindenschmidt, were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
“When the officers were specifically asked about what they saw and heard, their statements matched Tensing’s body camera video”.
“I would put our officers up against any police officers in terms of training and professionalism”, said Miami University police chief John McCandless, noting other jurisdictions lean on his staff for help with forensic evidence and a bomb dog.
In Lindenschmidt’s video, Tensing can be seen on the ground and then getting up. However there isn’t any indication on the video of how he ended up on the bottom.
Tensing was fired and has pleaded not guilty. No telephone listing for Kidd could be found.
In May 2014 – less than a month after Tensing joined the University of Cincinnati Police Department – Tensing was engaged in a heated exchange with two men after pulling their auto over because he said their bumper was dragging, according to ABC affiliate WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Campus police are generally employed by the universities or colleges they patrol. “There are many different issues and federal guidelines that have to be followed that are very specific to campus policing”, he said in an interview, adding municipal and campus police work closely together.
The passenger, Pace, later told WCPO-TV, “I shouldn’t have even been questioned”.
DuBose held up what seems to be a bottle of gin.
When the next responding officer walks up to the scene, he bumps Kidd in the chest near his body camera, asking him if it’s on. Utilizing phrases akin to “asinine” and “mindless”, the veteran prosecutor recognized for robust stands on city crime referred to as it “a hen crap” visitors cease.
Officers Eric Weibel and Phillip Kidd were among seven University of Cincinnati police officers and other officials named in a lawsuit alleging the wrongful death of Kelly Brinson, a 45-year-old mentally ill university hospital patient.
Deters has stated the officer ought to have simply let DuBose drive off.
