McIlroy could return from ankle injury at PGA Championship
Jordan Spieth will have another chance to replace McIlroy at No. 1 in the world next week at Firestone.
However, on Wednesday McIlroy posted a video on his Instagram account in which he was seen balancing on his left leg and twisting and throwing a gym ball to mimic the actions of the golf swing.
Rory McIlroy seems to be improving after severely injuring his ankle last month.
Accompanying the post is a comment from the Northern Irishman, which reads: “Feels good to hit the driver again!” He’s already working out on his ankle after recovering for a month, and he has another week before the season’s final major championship to regain stability and comfort.
Graeme McDowell said he has been texting with McIlroy to check in on him without asking about when he will play. But it certainly looks like he wants to make it happen.
“I firmly believe, having dealt with injury, and a lot of people hadn’t really talked about this, but it’s a pretty hilly golf course“, said the four-time tour victor, whose nagging back problems forced him into an early retirement. “So far in his career, McIlroy is on a different level than any young player, including me”. It’s pot holes and side slopes. He’s a fit kid.
The injury has sidelined McIlroy from competition, including the Scottish Open and The Open Championships, where he would have been defending champion had he participated.
It’s unclear if he plans to play in the tournament or continue to allow his ankle to rest.
Martin Laird and Sean O’Hair were the first two alternates. Both also missed the British Open.
