Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram ‘targeted in road-rage shooting’
Pakistan cricket community on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on former captain Wasim Akram and called on the government to immediately apprehend the culprits involved in firing on the legendary pacer.
Pakistan’s former fast bowler Wasim Akram has confidence on young fast bowling talent.
“The police is confused either with the wrong vehicle number or other details inadvertently provided by Akram”, said Abid Qaimkhani, the Senior Superintendent of Police, who is leading the investigation.
Akram helped police with the enquiries for nearly two hours and subsequently was unable to fulfil his coaching responsibilities at the National Cricket Stadium to where he had been headed.
“It is apparently an incident of road rage”, PA quotes Akram as saying.
Akram, considered one of the greatest one-day global cricketers of all time, told reporters that no one was hurt in the shooting which occurred as he was on his way to the city’s National Stadium where he is holding a bowling camp. “If he can do this to me, what will he do to the common man?”
He also led Pakistan in 25 test matches, winning 12, losing eight and drawing five.
Pakistan did not host a top-flight worldwide cricket match for six years after that attack.
After retiring, Akram became a sports commentator and started coaching Pakistani bowlers.
