Roosevelt, Washington, evacuated due to a fire

Crews in Washington state are working a fire that’s burned 10,000 acres along the eastern portion of the Columbia River Gorge.

Approximately 300 people left the town and surrounding area after a level 3 (leave now) order, according to Klickitat County Emergency Manager Jeff King.

The sheriff’s office said early Wednesday that the evacuation order was still in effect and that crews had so far been successful in shielding residences. And the Red Cross has set up a shelter.

The wind is much calmer Thursday, and fire spokesman Ron Fryer says the 275 crew members hope to have the grass fire fully contained by Saturday evening.

The evacuation order is expected to affect 25 homes, county officials said.

A reverse 911 call was sent out after the fire jumped State Route 14, which has since been closed, and spread quickly east toward the town.

Several fire departments in the county were involved in fighting the fire.
