‘Empire’ spin-off is ‘without question,’ says co-creator
There may be far more Empire coming our way!
Capitalizing on the runaway success of Empire, creator Lee Daniels is working with Fox on Star, a musical drama about a girl group that may serve as a sister series to the breakaway hit.
“There is going to be a spinoff from ‘Empire, ‘ without question”, he said. “We talked about it in the room already”. “That in itself is fascinating to me”.
Lucky for us, Fox also dropped a new Season 2 trailer today, which gives us plenty to chew on, including glimpses of Marisa Tomei as a billionaire businesswoman and Chris Rock (!) as a fellow inmate of Lucious’s.
Fox says that a mean of 17 million complete viewers tuned in to every “Empire” episode through the first week after the preliminary telecast.
The proposed one-hour pilot will be written, directed and executive produced by Daniels, although details on story and characters are scant at the moment, except for Fox sharing that the pilot will “showcase the allure and heartache of the cutthroat music scene, while also exploring cultural themes from a new perspective”.
Walden and Newman also confirmed that the network extended its deal with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, ensuring that “Gordon’s shows will be a part of the Fox schedule for several years to come”, Newman said.
“Here Cookie is now, but how did she get to where she’s at right now?” he shared. “It just hit me!”
Season 2 of Empire premieres Wednesday, September 23 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Between the mink coats that fill her Farmingon Hills closet, her diva behavior, and life and death she experienced as a former drug king pin, she says the colorful character is spot on. “I’m very excited that we are picked up”. “The more celebrates and stars I put on the show the more it takes away from the family”, Daniels said. Even my 88 year-old auntie said ‘Sophia, that 38-year-old Cookie sure does act like you. “It’s hard to turn out that kind of work – they’re not horses, you know”.
Chaiken added: “We will be able to devote as much time to each episode as we did in the first season”.
