Cecil the Lion: Hunter’s Guide Theo Bronkhorst Says He’s Done Nothing Wrong
Palmer paid $55,000 for the hunt earlier this month in which he shot Cecil with a powerful bow and arrow outside Hwange national park in the west of Zimbabwe.
Dr. Jan Seski, who runs a women’s health practice in Pittsburgh, was named by Zimbabwe as a client of Nyala Safaris, owned by a landowner who has been arrested on accusations of conducting an illegal hunt.
Bronkhorst assisted Walter James Palmer, a dentist and bow hunter from Minnesota who killed Cecil in early July.
Dr. Palmer has contended that his hunt was legal and that he had the appropriate permits, but Zimbabwe has charged his guide, Theo Bronkhurst, with failing to prevent an illegal hunt for an endangered animal.
Two professional hunters have appeared in a Zimbabwean court, each accused in separate cases of helping Americans kill lions.
On Saturday, Zimbabwe’s wildlife authority said it had suspended the hunting of lions, leopards and elephants in the Hwange area.
He added big game hunters would only be allowed if “authorised in writing by the Director-General of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority”. The head of Zimbabwes safari association said the killing was unethical and that it couldnt even be classified as a hunt, since the lion killed by an American dentist was lured into the kill zone.
Seski offered his identify and different figuring out info for a authorities database when he got here for the hunt, Zimbabwe Nationwide Parks spokeswoman Caroline Washaya Moyo stated. “I did not commit a crime and Seski did not commit a crime”. Police have opened an investigation and a security company has been hired to protect the property, the news agency said.
The animal was a tourist favorite and subject of an Oxford University research project.
Seski didn’t respond to messages left by The Associated Press. Dr. Seski could not be reached for comment.
Zimbabwe is seeking Palmer’s extradition.
Since the news of Cecil’s death broke, the government of the southern African country has come under increased pressure to crack down on illegal hunting.
He’s Pennsylvania doctor Jan Seski.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will likely work to determine whether or not Palmer’s hunting trip and the death of Cecil violated CITES.
Officials also confirmed – despite numerous reports over the weekend – that another lion, Jericho, has not been killed but is still alive and being tracked by the organization.
