Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal Criticize Gay Marriage Ruling
Conservatives never want to talk about slavery until it helps them push their agenda.
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, who has declared “I am not a libertarian, and I fight very strongly against libertarian influence within the Republican Party and the conservative movement”, is also unlikely to win any prizes for temperateness of rhetoric. On Thursday night, during the first Fox News 2016 debate, Santorum compared Obergefell v. Hodges, the recently decided Supreme Court case that upheld marriage equality, to the Dred Scott case in 1857.
“It is not any more than the Dred Scott [decision backing slavery] was settled law to Abraham Lincoln”, Santorum insisted.
The Supreme Court ruled in July that same-sex couples could marry nationwide in a landmark decision that created the new civil right in a 5-4 ruling.
Sanford decision centered around Missouri slave Dred Scott, who lived in the free state of Illinois between 1833 and 1843 before returning to Missouri.
“This is a rogue Supreme Court decision, just like Justice Roberts said”, Santorum said, adding that “there is no constitutional basis” for the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.
This isn’t the first time that Santorum has used this comparison. “You know what he said to me?” “Marriage is no longer about kids, it’s simply about adults”, Santorum said at the time.
“Now is the people’s opportunity respond because the future of the institution of marriage is too important to not have a public debate”, he said. We’re a co-equal branch of the government.
