Police, but no screening on bridge for papal visit
The Secret Service addressed reports that visitors crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge during the papal visit would go through a vigorous security screening late Friday afternoon, saying there will not be any law enforcement agents swiping the pedestrians with magnetic wands.
According to Robert K. Hoback, spokesperson for the Secret Service, visitors to Philadelphia will not see magnetometers waiting for them on the bridge, nor will they see Secret Service or city “screening stations”.
“What visitors should expect is some type of law enforcement presence on the bridge to ensure those who wish to cross, can do so in a safe and expeditious manner”, Hoback said.
He also promises a list of prohibited items within the safety zone to be set up within Center City Philadelphia.
“It can not be stressed enough that all parties involved in the planning for the Holy Father’s arrival have a great working partnership across the board and are committed to the secure and timely release of information”, the statement concluded.

Despite the roads being closed, Mayor Nutter hopes the Pope’s visit will encourage people to visit Philadelphia.
Dozens of streets within Philadelphia will also be closed off to traffic for the weekend.
Francis is scheduled to celebrate mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway, in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum, on that Sunday.
