Cecil the Lion: Dentist Reportedly Hires Security Firm to Guard Florida Home
Two females also took a picture of themselves in front of the home after they erected a mini memorial to Cecil outside of it.
That’s an encouraging development in the wake of the intense controversy over Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer, who allegedly lured Cecil the lion from the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe to shoot him with a crossbow, skin him and behead him as a trophy.
Walter Zalisko, owner of the Global Investigative Group which is run by former policemen, said they had put up CCTV cameras at the $1.1 million waterfront property in upscale Marco Island.
The garage-door vandalism is being investigated as criminal mischief, a first-degree misdemeanor, Baer said.
A hand-made sign criticizing Palmer was left in the yard last week.
Zimbabwe’s Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri has spoken out about the issue wants Palmer to be extradited to face charges.
He said he trusted his hunting guides, one of whom has been charged over the killing, and that he believed he had all necessary permits. Cecil was tracked about 40 hours later and killed with a rifle.
Researcher David Macdonald said: “The natural law in lion society is that when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors’ cubs”.
If these animals aren’t deserving of compassion and cries for justice, I’m not sure who is.
Palmer, a life-long big game hunter, returned to the United States before the authorities were aware of the controversy. I hope that people will give the same interest and attention on all endangered animals and express the same anger when they are slaughtered.
The dentist is under investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as well as various worldwide agencies.
Muchinguri, a 91-year-old veteran from President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party, described Cecil – a black-maned lion well-known to foreign tourists in the Hwange National Park – as an “iconic attraction”.
“I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion”, he said in a statement last week.
