East Texas judge sentences man guilty of assaulting girlfriend’s ex to
A Texas man who pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend has been sentenced to life – in matrimony.
Bundy was charged with assault in February against Elizabeth’s former boyfriend because he was allegedly “saying disrespectful things about Elizabeth”.
“Bundy told CNN affiliate KLTV, “(Rogers) offered me 15 days in jail and that would have been fine and I asked if I could call my job [to let them know]”, said Bundy.
Rogers, who also ordered Bundy to write bible verses (sigh.) and go to counseling (maybe the one good thing he ordered) probably feels like he’s done his civic duty and taught some young people about responsibility.
A constitutional law attorney told reporters that a court order to get married is actually illegal and had Bundy chose to instead go to jail a higher court would have likely thrown out the judge’s ruling. “People were laughing behind me and the bailiff had to say ‘order in the court.’ It was embarrassing”. “[The judge] can’t do this by court ordering somebody to be married”, said Kenneth Jaynes.
About six months into their relationship, the couple discussed getting married – but they planned to have a dream ceremony sometime far in the future.
“I do apologize if I didn’t understand the rules,” the boy said at the hearing, “but I do not apologize for not talking to (the father) because I have a reason for that, and that’s because he’s violent and I saw him hit my mom, and I’m not going to talk to him.”
KLTV The couple got hitched at the local courthouse in July.
“I used to watch Say Yes to the Dress and all those shows and all the dresses and think about what kind of dress I would have”, said Jaynes.
The new fiancée was in the courtroom when the judge forced the wedding proposal on her.
Most of the bride and groom’s family members were unable to attend because of the short notice.
In fear of losing his job due to jail time, Bundy says the couple applied for a marriage license and scheduled a date.
Rogers then told Bundy he would have to marry his girlfriend within 30 days as a condition of his probation. Bundy’s father and sisters couldn’t make it. “I would have liked a spring wedding when it’s not too hot and not too cold”.
