49ers release Aldon Smith after latest arrest

Smith was in the final year of his contract and 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said this week prior to the arrest that the team wanted to re-sign him.

With his struggles off the field, though, the gridiron may be the least of his concerns as he tries to get things in his life on the right track. As a result of the arrest and past issues regarding his off the field behavior, Friday morning’s arrest led to him being cut by the San Francisco 49ers. “People stumble”, he said.

ABC7 News’ Matt Keller reports that Smith was still in custody Friday morning, and that bail had been set at $26,000. The owner of that struck auto confronted Smith about the damage, they talked, and then, the NFL player walked away.

Clarke also stated that when officers first arrived on scene, Smith was not present.

Upon returning to the area, officers contacted him and administered a sobriety test. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

“Simple as this: Justice will be served and the truth will come out”. “And I’m sorry for anybody I let down, and I’m sorry the way this whole thing … As far as everything is concerned, it will work out how it’s supposed to work out”. “That’s all”. According to police, several shots were fired, two party goers were injured and Smith was stabbed. He also was suspended by the NFL for nine games in 2014 for violation of the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies. Smith was on probation after pleading no contest last year to three illegal gun charges and two DUI charges in Santa Clara County. It was his third arrest on suspicion of drunken driving since entering the NFL in 2011 as a first-round pick to the Niners out of Missouri.

He reworked his deal with the team in March and was due to make $322,150 for each game he was on San Francisco’s roster during the season. During the 2012 season, Smith racked up 66 tackles, 19.5 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles.

On a day when Smith has lost much, Haley remains in his corner for whatever comes next. This fraternity needs to be turned from the inside to the outside, because (young players) have no clue. “The guy is working really hard and he had a pitfall”, Tomsula said of Smith. “Alright? Thank you. Leave me alone”.
