Rex Ryan: Buffalo Bills considered signing Michael Vick
Ryan also said Friday that the Bills might not announce their starting quarterback until the regular-season opener on September 13 against the Indianapolis Colts.
“This will probably play out”, Ryan said. “Mike’s an impressive athlete, he is an incredible individual”.
Vick, 35, stays unsigned after spending final season with the, who have been coached by Ryan. I really enjoyed my year with Mike [last season with the Jets], and he’s great for a team. Nevertheless, our circumstances are a bit totally different than most groups on this league.
After all, Vick did spend a season playing under Ryan in New York previous year. And Mike will tell you, he’s not built really (to be) a bad-weather quarterback. “And he’d be the first one to tell you”. He doesn’t have great, big hands, and the weather affects him some.
The Buffalo Bills have Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel battling to start at quarterback in training camp and Cassel could be in the lead to open things up for Rex Ryan and this comes as the Bills are expecting a more explosive offense with Sammy Watkins, Charles Clay, Percy Harvin, LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson and Robert Woods on the roster. Last season Cassel played in just three games for the Vikings, but he has had experience as a starter in Minnesota and Kansas City and if Ryan wants to make the “safe” choice, Cassel is the likely option.
As an alternative of signing Vick, the Payments traded for veteran and signed former backup this offseason.
The scrimmage on Saturday is a good chance for Ryan and Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman to see which quarterback has the best grasp of the offense and which will take the next step forward in terms of securing the starting job.
“We considered it. And I know that’s not the spot for him”.
