Sacramento parents react to year of leave for new parents by Netflix
If a company provides paid leave, its usually about 12 weeks, or nothing close to what Netflix plans.
During their leave, parents will continue to receive full salary, and when they return, they can choose to return full-time, part-time, or temporarily.
The updated company rules regarding maternity and paternity, allow moms and dads to step away from work after the birth of their first child, or adoption, if the case may be. Only a third of U.S. companies that are three years old or younger have a parental leave policy, according to a 2014 study by display advertising startup PaperG.
“We’ve seen many employers expanding their amount of paid leave available, but it would be a small number of industries with a relatively small-to-medium size population that could afford to do something as extensive as Netflix“, said Tavarozzi.
The new policy gives parents “the freedom to make their own decisions along with the accompanying responsibility, ” Ms Cranz said, adding: “Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home”.
Silicon Valley is known for offering generous leave policies, but Netflix’s rule sets a strong precedent.

At the time the video-streaming firm announced this policy, CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix evaluates employees based on what they have done, not on how many hours they worked.
Google, for instance, offers 18 weeks of paid maternity leave.
Netflix already sells its services in dozens of other countries outside the U.S.as part of its ambition to be available throughout the world by the end of next year.
Tech companies may have more reason to offer these benefits than those in other fields, due to this sector’s competitive hiring nature.
One issue with parental leave programs is creating an environment in which employees feel comfortable taking the time offered, said Rich Fuerstenberg, a senior partner at Mercer. As a way to encourage women to both work and have babies, countries began offering paid maternity leave.
