Joey Logano sets record with Xfinity pole at Watkins Glen
He turned a fast lap of 127.839 miles per hour.
Allmendinger had issues with his engine at Sonoma and ended up finishing 37th.
Allmendinger’s victory in last year’s Cheez-It 355 at The Glen is his only career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory.
Last year we just weren’t running well. “I didn’t do a good job”. Everybody’s so close. It’s tough to pass. You start beating and banging on each other. It’s very aerodynamic-dependent. It’s a good start. “Strategy plays a lot in this race”.
Today’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Watkins Glen Zippo 200 race has a start time schedule of 3:00pm eastern time, noon pacific time, and airs on TV channel NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) in all markets where it’s available.
Busch has won four of the last six races after missing the first 11 with a broken right leg and left foot suffered in the Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona.
Kevin Harvick was fourth, followed by Jeff Gordon, Kyle Larson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Austin Dillon.
Allmendinger cruised through the first round of pole qualifying at the Glen, and held off Martin Truex Jr.in the final round to claim the top starting spot for Sunday’s race. But it really comes down to last year at this time I had never won a Sprint Cup race.
“We needed to go faster”, said Logano. I didn’t do a good job yesterday, so they saved me and gave me a good race vehicle. I had to go around some cars and our vehicle was just a little too loose, so I couldn’t get everything out of it. “I think we’re decent, but it’s going to take a while to get up there”. “That just didn’t happen”. We ran just a little bit slower than we did yesterday and some other guys picked up.
Gordon was almost a half-second faster than the rest of the field in final practice and the pole victor a year ago. He beat the best in Marcos Ambrose in a fender-slamming victory at Watkins Glen global last year for his first triumph in 213 starts in Cup competition. Still, he’s in a good spot, too, because starting up front on the high-speed track is critical.
Among those starting outside the top 20 for the 90-lap, 220.5-mile race which gets underway on Sunday afternoon at 2pm (7pm BST) are SHR’s Danica Patrick in 22nd, Hendrick’s Kasey Kahne in 23rd, Richard Petty Motorsports’ Sam Hornish Jr.in 24th and JGR’s Matt Kenseth in 26th.
