‘Straight Outta Compton’ memes hit Indy

And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.

Paul Giamatti will be playing N.W.A. manager Jerry Heller in the “Straight Outta Compton” movie.

After N.W.A.’s breakup, Andre “Dr. Dre” Young went on to record his first solo album, “The Chronic“, and spent the remainder of the 90s as one of rap’s most iconic artists and producers.

Much of the bloodlust in the film is linked to Suge Knight, who joined Dr. Dre in founding Death Row Records.

Lucky for him, Dre disentangled himself from Knight and went on to greater musical success.

We caught up with “Straight Outta Compton” Director F. Gary Gray about his latest film. “I wanted the story and the music to become part of them – we needed that authenticity”. Their influence over a young generation was unparalleled.

Filmed with the cooperation of surviving N.W.A. members, “Straight Outta Compton” strives to rehabilitate the image of Eazy-E, the initial frontman who fell out over financial disputes.

The platinum-penned MC then gives insight into his former beef with Common and explained, “Back in the day, me and Common’s beef was also a misunderstanding”. Adding to his sentiment he soon included, “If someone stepped in and hurt Drake now everybody’s gonna be looking at Meek Mill”. They put me through hard work; two years of auditions, callbacks, three different acting coaches and techniques, and also they flew me out to New York to live out there for a week and I had to do boot camp with a cross-trainer just to get in shape. Once we got through the chemistry reading, we started boot camp and O’Shea had to lose weight, Corey had to gain weight, and we all did that together. “I had to pinch myself, like, ‘Am I dead or something?’ It was weird seeing him, ’cause he’d studied me so much that he does everything I did”. “It’s a deep part right there, but you know, they made him look good”. “We shot the movie over a year ago, and at that time, we had no idea how things were going to turn out”.

While friendship, talent and ambition brought these five guys together, the greed that can so easily accompany fast money ultimately tore them apart. In an unstable time in American history, N.W.A. seemed to defy all odds and reach commercial success, with a few bumps along the way.
