North: Connecticut woman reaching for wallet or handbag on track fatally
The woman struck and killed by a Metro-North Railroad train at the Cos Cob station Friday morning reportedly dropped her wallet onto the tracks and went to retrieve it when she was struck by the train.
The train, which was running express between Greenwich and Stamford-albeit on the local track-was not scheduled to stop at Cos Cob, and came into the station at a speed between 40 and 45 miles per hour, Daniels said.
“The engineer did sound the horn while going through”, Daniels said.
According to MTA Spokeswoman Meredith Daniels, the female was on the platform and apparently dropped something, probably a handbag or wallet, onto the tracks. All lines are now on or close to schedule. Metro-North could not confirm this, but said that, at this time, no criminality is suspected. A Metro-North spokesperson confirmed to News 8 that the train was an express train from Grand Central bound for New Haven.
The victim’s identity was not released.
The deadly crash is the third along the Metro North and Amtrak train tracks within the past few months.
It happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
There were delays on the Waterbury branch of Metro-North because of police activity near Cos Cob.
