Man found dead in Yellowstone attacked by grizzly
An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of death of a hiker found in the vicinity of the Elephant Back Loop Trail in the Lake Village area of Yellowstone National Park.
The victim’s name is being withheld until they notify family members.
The national wildlife federation says a large female grizzly can weigh over 350kg (800 pounds). We are informed if bears are trapped and recognized as having been concerned in the assault, they are going to be euthanized.
The park recorded two deadly grizzly maulings in 2011. Park officers stated the man was a seasonal worker with Medcor, an organization that operates the pressing care clinics in Yellowstone.
“While the exact cause of death has not been determined, investigators have identified what appear to be defensive wounds on the victim’s forearms”, Yellowstone said.
As previously reported, the Yellowstone hiker’s body was discovered around noon Friday, August 7, after being reported missing that morning. A forensic autopsy is now scheduled for Monday.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim as they work to cope with the loss of someone who loved Yellowstone so very much”, Wenk said in the release.
The investigation is set to continue, although recent heavy rains on Friday and Saturday may complicate further DNA gathering.
Park officials offer this reminder: all of Yellowstone National Park is considered bear country.
Yellowstone rangers recommend that hikers alway stay on designated trails, leave an itinerary with others, hike in a group with at least three or more people, make noise on the trail, and carry bear repellent spray.
