3 found dead in Vermont home, day after fatal shooting
Vermont State Police originally said they were assisting Berlin officers with a death investigation.
The three people whose remains were found in the town of Berlin, not far from the state capital Montpelier, were related to Jody Herring, who was arrested on Friday after allegedly fatally shooting an employee of state Department of Children and Families in an ambush-style attack outside the department offices in Barre, Vermont.
Berlin Police, reached at around 11:15 a.m., said investigators are still at the scene and will release more information this afternoon.
A special legislative committee was set up to investigate the state child welfare system after the deaths last year of two toddlers who had been involved with DCF, 2-year-old Dezirae Sheldon, of Poultney, and 15-month-old Peighton Geraw, of Winooski.
State police have not said if they were searching for a suspect or if one was in custody.
Gov. Peter Shumlin said it’s not believed there’s a continuing threat related to the incidents.
“The tragedy that has gripped our state…is vast”.

Authorities said that victim, Lara Sobel, had handled a case for the state Department for Children and Families in which her alleged killer’s daughter was removed from the home. “I have contacted Gov. Shumlin and I am confident there will be a full investigation into what happened and why”. Berlin police said it was premature to comment on the victims’ cause of death. They found a pile of shell casings as well as two other victims with gunshot wounds, according to NY Daily News.
The attack came shortly after her 9-year-old was taken from her on July 9 into state custody. WPTZ.com will update this story as soon as more information is available.
