Cliff Pennington acquired by Blue Jays in trade
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired utility infielder Cliff Pennington in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to multiple reports.
It remains to be seen whether Pennington will replace Ryan Goins as the everyday second baseman, if he will platoon and become bench strength.
In 157 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks this season, Pennington batted.237. 237 with one home run and 10 RBI. 333 in 12 at-bats against left-handed pitching this season. The trade was announced during Toronto’s game Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
The playoff-contending Blue Jays sent shortstop Dawel Lugo to Arizona.
The switch-hitter is a career.
Pennington has appeared in 564 games at shortstop, 106 at second base, 31 at third base and five in the outfield. He is hitting. 257 with four home runs while driving in 44 runs for the Blue Jays’ Single-A teams in Lansing and Dunedin. Pennington had a strong rookie year, hitting.279/.342/.418 with the A’s, but that’s the only season in his major-league career in which he’s had an above-average offensive season.
