Rangers score 8 times in 11th inning to beat Mariners 11
Texas defeated Seattle 11-3 in eleven innings. One inning later they found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided score. Rookie left fielder Ryan Strausborger seemed to stumbled on the warning track, dropped Seth Smith’s leadoff fly ball and Tolleson was left to go the rest of the inning with the game dangling by a thread.
Tolleson then struck out Kyle Seager before the Rangers chose to load the bases on intentional walks to Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano.
“Not that I don’t trust Shawn against those guys, but at that point I’ve got an opportunity to choose who was going to take swings at us”, Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.
Texas opened the inning with seven straight hits, the first six off Rob Rasmussen (1-1).
Hamels, who was 6-7 with the Phillies, allowed eight hits and four runs over six innings. “I just stuck my hand out instinctively”, said Uehara, who was taken for X-rays at the ballpark which came back negative.
“From the third inning on I felt they were more aggressive early in the count”, Iwakuma said through a translator.
Trumbo hit his fourth home run with the Mariners leading off the fifth. “They walk the bases loaded and get away with it. That’s the way it goes”. Friday’s win was the fourth in five overall games for the Mariners and ended their three-game slide at home. Roguned Odor kept the inning going two batters later with an infield hit, and Gimenez brought in a run with a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
Mariners: LHP Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.07 ERA) makes his 13th major league start and first against Texas.
Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez has the flu, McClendon said. “I’m very disappointed”.
Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma worked through two long innings at the start and survived some shaky defense in the fourth in pitching through the seventh inning.
Texas Rangers pitcher Shawn Tolleson throws during the 11th inning out of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners, Saturday, August 8, 2015, in Seattle.
Rangers: LHP Martin Perez (1-2, 6.64) starts for the sixth time since returning from Tommy John surgery. Napoli was 0 for 2 with a walk before being replaced by pinch-hitter Mitch Moreland in the eighth. His line closed shortly thereafter when Joe Beimel yielded a two-run single to Delino DeShields. Cano’s throw from behind second base was too late to get DeShields at first. He was originally called safe by plate ump Dan Iassogna, but replay overturned the call. “We knew we played a lot of home games the second half of the season and we have to figure out a way to consistently win at home”.
The Mariners benefited from two replay challenges in the early innings.
Jamie Moyer, the winningest pitcher in Mariners history with 145 victories, will become the ninth person inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame on Saturday.
“I was trying to put the ball in play, but I got nothing else to say”, Montero said. After a rather disappointing July that saw the Rangers finish 10-14 and fall to almost 10 GB the Astros in the American League West, Jon Daniels pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade that brought lefty ace Cole Hamels to Arlington, days removed from throwing his first career no hitter.
