Sanders says he’ll support Iran nuclear deal
“I’m more for Schumer, because I think that Iran may end doing something that is detrimental to the country”, said one resident. He said in his statement he opposed the nuclear deal because he believed Iran would not change and that the deal would let it eliminate sanctions while retaining “nuclear and non-nuclear power”.
In defending his push for an Iran deal, Obama reiterated the arguments he’s made for weeks: that the agreement will prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and that rejecting it would present the U.S. with only worse options, including another war.
Earnest did not take a stand on whether the promised “no” vote from Schumer, who is a top candidate to take over as the Senate Democratic leader when Harry Reid retires, would affect his election for that position.
“The Congresswoman commends Senator Schumer for his decision to protect our national security”.
If enough Democrats vote down the bill, then Congress could override a potential presidential veto, which would kill the agreement for good, CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reported.
Rep. Brad Sherman, D-California, another pro-Israel member, announced Friday that he would also vote against the deal, becoming the 9th House Democrat to publicly oppose the agreement. They say they are anxious that, in working to counter Aipac’s tactics and discredit its claims about the nuclear accord with Iran, the president has gone overboard in criticizing the group and like-minded opponents of the deal. Almost 60 legislators-22 Democrats and 36 Republicans- from the US House of Representatives will travel to Israel this month, which is being paid for by the American Israel Education Foundation, the charitable arm of AIPAC. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Sen. Matt House, a spokesman for the senator this morning in an e-mail to me, confirmed that Schumer would also vote to override an expected Obama veto if the rejection measure passes Congress.
He also continued Obama’s rhetoric from earlier this week, tying Schumer’s opposition to the deal to the senator’s 2003 support for the invasion of Iraq, which the president voted against.
Schumer notified the White House of his decision before making his announcement, Earnest said.
Another New York Congressman, Eliot Engel voiced his opposition to the deal.
“If Iran’s true intent is to get a nuclear weapon, under this agreement, it must simply exercise patience”, Schumer argued. He needs the support of 34 of the 100 senators to maintain his veto and protect the deal.
“If Schumer does, in fact, come out against the deal, it might mean that the future Dem leader understands that Obama’s victory is secure”, tweeted The Atlantic columnist Jeffrey Goldberg.
As part of the deal, the worldwide Atomic Energy Agency will have to verify that Iran does indeed scale down its facilities, clearing a path towards ending UN, US and EU sanctions. The deal faces nearly unanimous opposition from Republicans.
