Football team allows opposition to score after accidental goal
The ball was played out in order for Bury defender Nathan Cameron to receive treatment, and Rovers’ Harry Forrester pulled off one of the best goals you will ever see, as his intended pass sailed over the Bury goalkeepers head.
Doncaster Rovers allowed Bury to walk in an equalising goal in their English third-tier match on Saturday after they had unintentionally taken the lead themselves.
A hard-fought match against Bury was heading for a 0-0 draw on the opening day of the League One season until an 89th-minute injury saw Bury boot the ball out of play.
The players and coaching staff then got into a heated debate while Forrester protested his innocence and after referee Eddie Ilderton consulted his assistants and each manager, Doncaster allowed Leon Clarke to stroll forward uncontested from the kick-off and tap in an equaliser.
After the match, Doncaster manager Paul Dickov said they were put into a tough situation but had to do what was right to uphold the club’s name and honour.
“Paul put football in a good place with his sportsmanship”, Flitcroft said.
After a lot of booing from the fans and anger from Bury, Dickov ordered his players to ensure that justice be carried out.
“He tried to get the refferee to award a foul throw initially, but then he’s allowed us to score from the restart”.
What happened next would seem freakish to anyone who just switched on the game on TV.
“When it did we just had to allow them to score because you can’t win a game like that”.
