Texas Judge orders man to marry girlfriend
An East Texas man was given a choice of sentences after pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend: go to jail, or get married.
Josten Bundy said that he got into a physical confrontation with the ex-partner of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Jaynes, last February.
Bundy admitted that he assaulted his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend when she was “disrespectful” to her, stating that he should have known better.
Judge Randall Rogers of Smith County ordered 20-year-old Josten Bundy in July to marry 19-year-old Elizabeth Jaynes within 30 days.
His other option was 15 days in jail. Rogers also ordered Bundy to write Bible verses and get counselling as part of his probation, according to KLTV.
Jaynes attended the hearing and was so embarrassed.
Bundy agreed to the judge’s proposal, and the couple duly applied for a marriage license.
“I took matters into my own hands and I know that’s wrong”. “It was just going to be kind of pieced together, I didn’t even have a white dress.”
Court records showed that the judge told one of the children, 14-year-old Liam Tsimhoni, that it was not normal behavior and the children had been brainwashed. Even the bride was dismayed, as she really wanted a spring wedding instead of getting married in the heat of the summer. And the “Is she worth it?” question drives home the point that Jaynes wasn’t so much a human concern for the judge as an object lesson. Judge Rodgers asked, according to court transcripts, KLTV reported.
“I ed a few legal professionals, however they advised me somebody was making an attempt to tug my leg … that judges don’t court-order someone to get married”, stated Kenneth Jaynes.
“Get married or go jail”. “People were laughing behind me and the bailiff had to say ‘order in the court.’ It was embarrassing”, she said.
The couple said they could get only 18 days to make arrangements didn’t have the sufficient time to invite their close friends and relatives.
Judge Rogers stepped into my family and tried to tell them what to do without any regard for me or anything.
“The judge told me ‘nope, that’s not how this works, ‘” Josten told local news station KLTV.
The newlyweds hope to have a bigger wedding in the future when they can afford it.
