Unarmed teen shot, killed by rookie officer in Texas

In the past 24 hours, the hashtag #ChristianTaylor has been used more than 55,000 times, according to the social analytics site Topsy.

The officer who shot and killed Taylor has been identited as 49-year-old White male, Brad Miller.

Johnson made reference to these debates, saying that “our nation has been wrestling with the subjects of social injustice, inequities, racism and police misconduct”.

Johnson said Miller and another officer found Taylor “freely roaming” inside the dealership when they arrived. Johnson said Taylor appeared to have kicked out the windshield of a auto.

Johnson told reporters that the officers spotted Taylor in the building and believed a felony burglary was in progress. He also said the sequence of events for that night haven’t been established yet.

Arlington officer Brad Miller has been placed on administrative leave. The first report of gunfire came two minutes later.

Taylor died at the scene.

“Everything about the outcome of this incident is a tragedy”, Johnson said.

Police are conducting an internal investigation in addition to the criminal investigation into Miller’s actions. Arlington police are investigating the shooting, and say that will try to obtain as much information on the shooting as possible.

“The facts available today do not answer all questions or alleviate all concerns”, Johnson said.

Christian Taylor had “no real problems”, his father added.

Mr Taylor’s great uncle told the local paper the Fort Worth Star Telegram that he was a talented football player and he couldn’t imagine why he would have wanted to burgle a auto dealership.

The men said that within the last month, Taylor had developed a deeper spiritual side and had committed himself to the church.

He was a good man and a talented football player, Taylor’s great-uncle Clyde Fuller told the Star-Tribune.

In interviews with the Washington Post, two witnesses said that when encountered by police, the woman had a knife, which they described as relatively small. That case was dismissed on July 14 after the young man completed his probation, according to court records. He said that he didn’t know why his son would have been at the vehicle dealership at that time of night but that he shouldn’t have been killed.

Subsequent deaths, including Freddie Gray who died after suffering an injury while in police custody in Baltimore and 12-year-old Tamir Rice who was shot dead in Cleveland while holding a pellet gun, have kept a focus on the use of force and calls for officers to be prosecuted when acting above the law.
