Mortal remains of Kalam flown to Rameswaram, PM Modi to attend funeral

People across India are paying homage to former President Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam – a career scientist and aerospace engineer turned reluctant politician – who took his last breath on Monday at the age of 83.

Kalam fell sick Monday while addressing the students of the Indian Institute of Management in the Meghalaya state capital, Shillong, said P.B. Warjri, chief secretary of the state.
It noted that the Council’s Executive Committees mirror the five sectors (agriculture, infrastructure, education and healthcare, information and communication technology, and defence technology) that Kalam astutely identified as crucial to India’s development.
As news of his death spread like wildfire, many former and current Indian cricketers took to social media to offer their condolences and remember him for the man he was. He would reply to most of the children who wrote to him. He said, “Abdul Kalam was a man with profound knowledge, inspiration to entire nation, and his teachings and ideas will long live in our hearts”. To pay full respect to him we need to follow his words and thought by live implementation. “Another interest we shared was the PURA concept – providing urban facilities for rural areas”, he said.
