Celtic earns 2-0 win at Partick, Aberdeen beats Kilmarnock
Rogic had last started for The Bhoys in September 2013, but was given his chance by coach Ronny Deila after Celtic returned from its UEFA Champions League trip to Azerbeijan.
Deila confessed that Rogic’s prolonged absence from the side which culminated in a loan move to Melbourne Victory last year meant he is only now finding out what kind of player he has at his disposal.
His low cross was stunned into the path of Rogic by Griffiths and the B#400,000 signing from Central Coast Mariners – making just his second league start for the Parkhead club since signing in January 2013 – netted brilliantly with an instinctive finish.
However, having made an impact against Inverness, Deila insists that the attacking midfielder could still play a key part at Celtic Park.
“He was very good in the first 40 minutes”, said the Norwegian.
Normally if a defender is heading for the touchline you’d expect him to use his physical strength to hold up the ball.
“When I came here I didn’t know who he was”. When we got him started again, I saw he had something special, his touch, his understanding, that he is a good player.
Deila went on to say that he told Rogic he would never leave Celtic until he had the chance to prove himself and after this weekend’s performance he is clearly starting to do just that. “He has already been on the bench in the Champions League this season and he is an option for the team at that level if he shows what he did today”.
‘He is also a very good professional.
“Pogba came on and showed he gives us something a bit different”.
“I think the first 35 minutes was some of the best football we’ve played this season”, the Celtic manager, whose side now face Kilmarnock on Wednesday, said. ‘We should maybe have rested him. “But I’ve been working really hard over the past year or so and working towards a day like this”.
Deila added: “He was stiff and tight in the groin before the game”. I wanted him to play and that was a bad decision.’.
Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald felt his team made life too easy for Celtic in the crucial opening period of the game.
“We didn’t retain the ball and make it a battle against Celtic, which we have to do”.
‘We gave Celtic too much respect.’.
