Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation domiantes US box office on opening weekend
I could tell you about how much fun I had in the theater watching the flick or how my heart wanted to pound out of my chest watching Tom Cruise hang off the side of a plane at 5,000 feet or cruise down freeways on a motorcycle at break-neck speed, but our good friend Travis Poppleton already did all that in his excellent review, “Where does “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” rank in the series?” Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Ferguson also star.
The launch of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation outperformed forecasts by a significant margin.
In the fifth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise returns as Agent Ethan Hunt – and both seem to have something to prove.
“Rogue Nation” has the most action of any of the “Mission: Impossible” movies so far, directed with a sure hand by Christopher McQuarrie. The original plan had been to open on Christmas Day this year, but Moore noted that Cruise had asked during filming – which started last August – could be moved up to avoid competing directly against the next “Star Wars” movie (which opens December 18) and James Bond’s “Spectre“, which launches November 6.
The film, which is yet to release in several other countries, has raked-in 121 million dollars in-total globally, Deadline.com reported. In 2011, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” pulled in $209-million in the US and $485-million internationally.
Warner’s R-rated comedy “Vacation” debuted in a distant second place this weekend with $14.8 million. It generated an A- Cinemascore among audiences under 35.
Rounding out the rest 10 top movies this weekend in the United States and Canada were “Minions” (12.2 million dollars), “Pixels” (10.4 million), “Trainwreck” (9.7 million), “Southpaw” (7.5 million), “Paper Towns” (4.6 million), “Inside Out” (4.5 million) and “Jurassic World” (3.8 million).
Marvel’s “Ant-Man” finished third in its third weekend, adding $12.6 million to its total gross.
