The Guardian believes that Everton’s resolve will be tested this week, with Chelsea expected to increase the offer up to £30m for Stones, who is seen by the Chelsea camp as a long term replacement of skipper John Terry.
Manchester United had also been keen on landing the talented 21-year-old, but it now looks like Mourinho will succeed in one of the deals of the summer and bring Stones to Chelsea. “[He] will always give everything to this club”. They will always find solutions and never get done, Martinez continued, describing the 21-year-old’s performance in the 2-2 draw with Watford on Saturday as “sensational”. As for Arouna Koné’s 86th-minute equaliser, it left Martinez glad to have seen the “Arouna Koné I know he can be”, though the fans who groaned at his introduction may need a bit more convincing.
Not veterans Gareth Barry or even Phil Jagielka, nor new boy Tom Cleverley; but 21-year- olds Ross Barkley and John Stones, who their manager insists are the future of the club.
Jagielka told the Daily Express: “It’s not an easy scenario”. It is a little bit of test for him now.
“If we’re disappointed, and we have the feeling that we have lost two points in this stadium, it is a good sign”, he added.
“It is easy for people to let it go to their heads or decide not to be totally committed”.
“I will speak to him and try to guide him the best I can but that is something that is between the players and the backroom staff”.
For his part, Mourinho was sticking to his assertion of last week that he is not thinking about further player acquisitions and refused to be drawn on the newspaper speculation regarding Stones following his own team’s 2-2 draw against Swansea on Saturday.
