Mindy Kaling grateful to Hulu for saving ‘The Mindy Project’
“It’s very fun for Mindy to have the wish-fulfillment of that because she’s having a lot of problems with Danny”, Kaling says.
Danny, meanwhile, ends up with Freida Pinto.
The comedy, produced by NBC Universal, returns September 15, picking up where it left off: Mindy is pregnant with her boyfriend, Danny Castellano (Chris Messina), who’s gone to India to tell her parents he’s in love with her.
Content wise, however, not all that much will change, said producers.
Season 4 of The Mindy Project will feature guest appearances from Freida Pinto, Garret Dillahunt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays the “man of Mindy’s dreams” in an alternate reality episode.
Barinholtz referenced a past episode of the comedy when Fox said they weren’t allowed to say “Jesus” or even “jeez” when discussing how a character’s physical strength. “OB’s are like the Republican Party”.
She was on hand at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills – along with fellow executive producer Matt Warburton and the cast – and spoke of the comedy’s beleaguered journey.
“Maybe it’s old-fashioned, but I like a Christmas episode that airs in December”, Kaling said of the weekly-release method.
The procedure will apply to “The Mindy Project”, which joins Hulu fold for its fourth season after being canned by Fox, as well as “Casual”, “The Hotwives of Las Vegas”, “The Awesomes” and “RocketJump: The Show”.
Structurally “The Mindy Project” will change slightly as well.
Explaining that characters on “The Mindy Project” can only change “5 percent at a time”, Kaling teases that some amusing situations are in store when Mindy’s “maternal instinct comes out”. “I’m such an ambitious person and I’m so grateful to Hulu for giving us this opportinity”. “And things like motherhood will bring out aspects of her personality… which we’ve not seen before, obviously”.
(Firefly fans still probably wonder what would have happened had the show premiered a decade later.) Not just for audiences, but for those actually creating these shows, as seen today during Hulu’s The Mindy Project panel at TCA.
That balance wasn’t always in the show since Season 1, but it’s something they’ve found over the years. “So we made a conscious effort to keep a similar tone”. “A lot of the adjustments just came on the fly as we made these episodes”.
