Steve Jobs – the musical
It was reported that the opera is all about the examination of Jobs’ life, which was dominated by his work as Apple’s founder.
The new production will add to the already impressive collection of works of art, which include books, documentaries and films, inspired by the sometimes controversial Jobs who passed away in 2011 aged only 56. Santa Fe’s production will be distinguished from this interpretation though because it will reportedly have a kinetic electro-acoustic score and lush vocals to capture the fast-paced but creative Silicon Valley vibe.
The opera, due to launch in Los Angeles, will focus on the man behind the Mac, exploring the late entrepreneur’s personal relationships, with his wife, but also the daughter he initially rejected.
According to the Sante Fe Opera website, the opera will tackle all of the major moments in Steve Jobs’ life, starting at the moment he learns he has cancer and flashing back to earlier points in his life, showing the significant moments and individuals who shaped his career and legacy.
The title of the opera is “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs“, and it will be composed as a collaboration between libretto writer Mark Campbell and composer Mason Bates. “When they collide, that’s when it gets interesting”.
Campbell won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for the opera, “Silent Night“, while Bates created the highly acclaimed “Omnivorous Furniture”, which combines orchestral and electronic music. When he returned 11 years later, he again made huge strides, introducing the iMac, iPod, and iPhone.
