Neymar: Barcelona striker out for two weeks with mumps
Barcelona confirmed he had been previously vaccinated against the disease.
Mumps is a viral disease that causes fever, muscle pain and headaches.
The medical staff at the Catalan club decided that he was to be given two weeks to recuperate.
And Neymar is also ruled out of the two-legged Spanish Supercopa against Athletic Bilbao, which takes place on 14th and 17th August.
Neymar and Messi scored once to help Barcelona lift the Joan Gamper Trophy with 3-0 win against Italian side AS Roma.
“They look great. They’ve been spectacular”, Luis Enrique told reporters, according to Goal.
Neymar’s injury gives credence to reports suggesting that Pedro’s proposed move to Manchester United had been delayed so that he could play in the Supercup. “This is the path we want to follow”, he added.
Barcelona play Sevilla in the European Super Cup on Tuesday.
Neymar is also in jeopardy of missing the La Liga opener on August. 23.
This development, allied to the fact that new signings Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan are both ineligible until January, means that Barca are somewhat short of numbers.
