US consulate attack in Istanbul, one suspect captured
The incident followed an overnight bomb attack on a police station in Istanbul that injured 10 people, including seven police officers.
Video footage showed police officers with rifles blocking off the streets outside the consulate in the Sariyer neighborhood of Istanbul.
No-one was hurt in the attack on the consulate building, but the two gunmen escaped after a gun battle with police, Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported. Police said the assailants exploded a vehicle bomb near the station.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said police later caught one person in connection with the attack, but provided no details.
It included air strikes against so-called Islamic State group fighters in Syria and Kurdish militants in northern Iraq, and the detention of hundreds of suspects at home. He said the diplomatic site would remain closed “until further notice”.
According to preliminary information, the terrorist attack has been carried out by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Turkish authorities have arrested more than 1,300 people since late last month in police raids nationwide targeting suspected members of the PKK as well as IS and the DHKP-C.
In 2013, a suicide bombing at the U.S. Embassy in the capital Ankara killed a Turkish security guard and injured one other person.
