Newcastle have signed Northampton teenager Ivan Toney
Asked about the new era, McClaren said: “We want it to be different, and it needs to be“.
Newcastle United have made their fourth signing of the summer after completing their move for Northampton Town wonderkid Ivan Toney.
Toney says he likes to let his feet do the talking and will be happy just so long as he is playing football and getting the chance to show what he can do.
“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing”.
Despite his tender age, Toney managed 53 appearances over his three seasons in the first-team and his reputation was beginning to grow with every campaign.
Former Newcastle forward Peter Beardsley, who now acts as the club’s football development manager, said: “We have been very impressed with Ivan already”.
The 19-year-old, who came through the Cobblers’ youth ranks, becomes the Premier League outfit’s fifth summer signing.
Wilder was unsurprised by the high profile interest in Toney with a number of other Premier League and Sky Bet Championship sides registering their interest in the young striker before he secured his move to the north east.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Ivan to go and join one of the biggest clubs in the country”.
‘He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the club’.
United owner Mike Ashley pledged to “invest” in the squad before the club secured its Premier League status on the final day of last season.
