Brazilian journalist dies after being shot while hosting radio program
He was highly critical of the local government and commonly spoke of political corruption during his show.
(São Paulo) – Brazilian authorities should ensure a prompt, thorough, and independent investigation into the killing of the radio host Gleydson Carvalho at the radio station where he worked on August 6, 2015, Human Rights Watch said today.
Mr Carvalho was shot three times in the head and twice in the chest.
The incident happened Thursday in the city of Camocim located in Ceará, moments before the radio personality began working on his show.
“Immediately after that, the individuals entered and executed Gleydson with three bullets to the head and two to the stomach”.
Martinho Marques, a friend of the victim, told Sputnik on Friday, that Carvalho had recently begun to act nervously, locking the door from his studio to the hallway while on air. Sources say police in Brazil or actively searching for the suspects behind horrific slaying.
Carvalho, who was known for denouncing people on his show, was killed while a musical intermission was playing.
Several Brazilian media outlets have reported that Carvalho had received threats because of his work.
The on-air killing of Gleydson Carvalho was also decried by many journalist groups.
“Attacks against journalists for their work threaten freedom of expression and the very fabric of democracy”, said Maria Laura Canineu, Brazil director at Human Rights Watch.
