Man charged with assaulting mayor amid affair allegations
The Vestavia Police Department has not confirmed Green’s role in the assault that officials described as a “domestic issue”.
Gilham said the suspect’s name and additional information will likely be released Monday morning when warrants are obtained.
Barton said he was only able to get away because he kicked the man repeatedly.
Police say Green was arrested on the scene after bystanders detained him when he tried to flee on a bicycle.
An Irondale man faces assault charges after police say he attacked Talladega’s mayor Saturday. Police are still not discussing a possible motive in the attack, but Green’s former lawyer Stewart Springer told AL.com Sunday the dispute began because “Barton was caught on hidden video having sex with Green’s wife”. He was first taken to Brookwood Hospital for evaluation and then transported to the Vestavia Hills Municipal jail. “I couldn’t tell who it was”, said Barton from his hospital bed. “I was able to kick him twice – hard”, he said.
“He starts wailing me with this, not a ball bat but something that looks like a bat”, Barton said. “He fell on the ground”.
According to Barton, the suspect, Benny Green, ambushed him while wearing a trench coat and a hood outside the shop around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Barton – asked directly – said he was not involved with Green’s wife.
Barton identified his assailant as Benny Green, who he said he’s known for more than a decade and who was a co-host on Barton’s current events show, “In the Interest of the People“, until a few years ago.
However, the Greens are now in the process of a divorce.
