Parliament Logjam: PM Modi Likely to Intervene, Resignations Over LalitGate

The speaker of India’s Parliament on Monday barred 25 opposition legislators from its sessions for the rest of the week for causing “grave disorder” after they created noisy scenes. There were indications that even the Real Estate Bill could be brought in.

Through the ordinance, the government had sought to exempt itself and private companies from obtaining consent of 80 per cent of the people to be affected by a land acquisition, if it is doen for national security, defence, rural infrastructure and industrial corridors.

“Today Sushma Swaraj has cleared everything”.

Meanwhile, the Congress showed no signs of relenting with party chief Sonia Gandhi insisting that “no meaningful” proceedings were possible as long as those responsible for “gross wrong-doings” remain in office.

Modi’s appeal to the opposition for support at the start of the monsoon session in July has been ignored. “Leave it to them, please don’t disrupt the house”. The government has rejected the opposition’s demand.

“A small minority should not hold the House to ransom and obstruct proceedings”.

“Since parliament is not functioning and there is no way to clarify these points before the same, I am constrained to place the above facts in public domain”, the finance minister wrote in the post titled “Dissent or Disruption – The Congress Party’s Position on GST”.

The Congress had yesterday said that the logjam in Parliament would continue unless all corruption issues involving the ruling BJP are resolved. He spoke about the lack of government initiative in the matter of resolving the issues as they do not want to run the house smoothly.

Responding to questions, Mr Surjewala said, “The government must realise that there can be no democracy without Opposition”. Stating that the scam took place when medical education department was headed by Chouhan, Scindia said it has dented the image of Madhya Pradesh at the worldwide level.

The Samajwadi Party has said it does not want Sushma Swaraj to resign, but the chief ministers must.

She said the demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should intervene in the debate has little meaning as he has done so on a total of five occasions in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

He also demanded Prime Minister’s immediate intervention to build confidence among the farming community, including announcing of a moratorium on recovery by scheduled banks. Anybody with a degree of sensitivity would have been struck by revulsion over the manner in which the Congress party has been behaving, scuttling all attempts at debate and discussion.

“If there is an effort for resolving the stalemate it is welcome”.

Maintaining that no minister had “done anything wrong, nothing illegal or immoral”, Naidu said the central government was ready to discuss any issue.
