Perry stops paying South Carolina staff
Perry spent 14 years at Texas governor, the longest tenure in state historical past, earlier than leaving workplace in January.
National Journal first reported that the campaign had stopped paying its six staffers in South Carolina.
Katon Dawson, the chair of Perry’s efforts in South Carolina, confirmed that he and his five fellow staff members there had “moved to volunteer status”.
The marketing campaign introduced in July that Perry had raised exclusively round $1 million in a few month – although tremendous PAC help pushed its complete struggle chest to just about $18 million.
He said he and four other key campaign operatives in the state would continue to work unpaid.
“As the campaign moves along, tough decisions have to be made in respect to both monetary and time related resources”, said his campaign manager, Jeff Miller.
Republican presidential candidates (L-R) Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum participate in a presidential pre-debate forum hosted by FOX News and Facebook at the Quicken Loans Arena August 6, 2015 in Cleveland, Ohio.
According to Politico, Perry’s communications director “remains committed” to campaigning in the early primary states.
Perry’s Iowa campaign spokesman, Robert Haus, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Monday night.
“As far as I know, we still have a plan and we’re still on track”, said Sam Clovis, the campaign’s Iowa state chairman.
In addition to the more than $1 million raised, Perry-supporting super PACs, which are not directly affiliated with the campaign, have reported much larger numbers. Despite his bad experience with debating on back pain meds in 2012, his compelling history should make him a shoo-in for the top tier of the 2016 race.
According to an NBC News poll released on Monday, Perry is in 10th place among Republican contenders, with the support of two percent of GOP voters.
