Mets 3B David Wright to play Monday in rehab game
New York Mets captain and third baseman David Wright will start his minor league rehab assignments Monday beginning with Class A St. Lucie.
Kolligian notes that the Mets are aiming for Wright to take a total of 30 at-bats on his rehab assignment, which would cover 10 days barring setbacks. Wright hasn’t played since mid-April due to spinal stenosis.
“There’s not much more preparation I can do other than games”, Wright said while visiting the Mets last week in Miami.
Still, there is no question that Wright has the potential to be the player he was in 2012-his last completely healthy season-when he hit.
With Wright’s status uncertain around the trade deadline, Sandy Alderson added three bats that immediately helped the lineup.
The big splash to bring in Yoenis Cespedes gave the Mets the middle of the order hitter that they needed. On Tuesday, he’ll play third base for another five innings if he feels good.
Wright is the leader of the Mets, and it will be interesting to see how long Collins sticks with him if he is struggling.
There is no denying Terry Collins wants the player of David Wright’s stature back in his everyday lineup and clubhouse as soon as possible.
