Composer James Horner’s Agency Confirms He Died in Plane Crash — Sad News

James Horner’s agent says the Oscar-winning “Titanic” composer was the pilot who died in a Southern California plane crash. Mr. Horner was a licensed pilot. He worked with such well-known directors as Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Oliver Stone, Norman Jewison and Edward Zwick. He got an Academy Award nomination, so he thanked me afterwards but we both allowed that was not the best way to do things.

Always prolific, Horner was particularly productive during the 1990s; he won six of his 12 Grammy Awards in the decade.

Nevertheless, Cameron chose Horner to do the music for “Titanic”. “My heart aches for his loved ones”.

He first collaborated with Cameron in 1986 on the science-fiction thriller “Aliens,” writing an Oscar-nominated score in only 10 days. In a career spanning more than 30 years and over 100 films, he’s been involved in multiple classic scores like Willow, Star Trek The Wrath of Kahn, Field of Dreams and the epic Braveheart. In “Apollo 13,” he used the sound of the flute to lend a sense of otherworldly fragility to the drama of astronauts trapped in space. “So it ends up being not literally Scotland or not literally Africa”. But as a director he’s also keenly aware of just how important the score is to the success of three of his biggest films and that comes across in his warm words.

The two met during production of Roger Corman’s forgettable “Battle Beyond the Stars,” on which Cameron toiled as a junior model builder before getting a battlefield promotion to production designer.

James Roy Horner was born in Los Angeles on August 14, 1953, the son of Harry Horner and the ex- Joan Frankel, Austrian immigrants.

The Hollywood Reporter cited Sylvia Patrycja, who it says is identified on Horner’s film music page as his assistant, in confirming his death. What starts as a montage to a marriage takes a heartrending turn, and as the characters undergo their journey, this piece of music swells and slows from idyllic to heartbreaking over the course of a few minutes, while pretty much keeping the same melody.

Yet while Rose’s heart goes on in “Titanic”, so must our hearts go on after such a shocking loss.

Horner leaves behind a wife, Sarah, and two daughters.

He also scored a dozen television shows and the theme music for an eclectic series of projects, including Michael Jackson’s Captain EO attraction at Disneyland and Katie Couric’s debut on the CBS Evening News. (The theme was changed in 2011.).

The prolific composer still has work that has yet to be released in movie theaters.
