Indiana Pacers RUMORS: Toney Douglas To Sign Deal, Unlikely To Make Team?
Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today reported earlier today that unrestricted free agent Toney Douglas will sign with the Indiana Pacers. Last season with the Pelicans, Douglas only played in 12 games and averaged 4.3 points per game while making just 37 percent of his field goal attempts.
Douglas has a career average of 7.6 points per game. Douglas will have to show the Pacers he still has what he showed in his Knicks days in him and if he does, he might force the Pacers hand, as they could really use a backup point guard. If it’s a one-year minimum contract, the National Basketball Association will pay a portion of it. That wouldn’t have happened by claiming him, because he was on a two-year deal, even though that was for the minimum.
The Pacers have 15 players with guaranteed salaries, and their four lowest-paid players – Shayne Whittington, Joseph Young, Rakeem Christmas and Glenn Robinson III – signed this offseason.
Indiana Pacers guard C.J. Watson (32) is fouled by New Orleans Pelicans guard Toney Douglas (16) at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans Wednesday, February 11, 2015.
The Pacers already have 15 players under contract, so Douglas is joining the roster as a training camp invite and is the easiest option to discard prior to the season. Otherwise, Douglas probably gets squeezed out in late October.
