Samsung said to be considering Snapdragon 820 for Galaxy S7
But while that is indeed big news, it is so far the only huge blot in the company’s track record.
With their Snapdragon offerings, Qualcomm is a major player in both the high end but also the now growing and more competitive mid-range device segment.
According to the document, the new Samsung Galaxy S7 would be powered with a Qualcomm MSM8996 version, a codename used for the Snapdragon 820 chipset.
Back in December, news broke that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 was overheating and that many manufacturers were considering skipping the processor for their flagship smartphones. But now it can capture/playback video at 1080p and has X5 LTE for Cat 4 download speeds. Their successors, the 412 and 212, respectively, push things up just wee bit in line with the demands of today’s mobile users. It’s still the same Cortex-A53, meaning 64-bit.
The Snapdragon 616 – the more powerful of this particular bunch – is scarcely discernible from the current Snapdragon 615 on paper.
The Snapdragon 212 is naturally less powerful.
The chip supports Quad HD 2560×1600 screen, and Miracast for up to 1080p wireless displays, 4K@30fps capture, 1080p@120fps capture with Hardware HEVC (H.265) encode and decode. But it features CPU speeds up to 1.3 GHz, rather than 1.1 GHz. Also included with the 412 is an Adreno 306 GPU, integrated X5 LTE Global Mode modem, and support for cameras up to 13.5 megapixels and screen solutions up to 1920×1200.
Despite being low-end chips, the Snapdragon 412 and 212 feature some of Qualcomm’s best technologies, like Quick Charge for fast charging action.
