DC Woman Shot in Shoulder by Police Facing Charges
Renita Nettles was waving a knife just a few feet away from the officer in Washington DC, in the USA.
Bystander video shows a woman who Washington, D.C. police said was armed with a knife, moments before she was shot in the shoulder by a police officer.
Nettles has additionally been charged with assault on a police officer and assault with a lethal weapon.
The D.C. Police Union is standing by the officer who shot the knife-wielding Nettles on Saturday as community members continue to criticize the officer’s actions.
An internal investigation into the shooting has begun and the officer involved has been placed on paid leave, which is typical in such instances.
Police did not provide an update on Nettles’ condition, but she was expected to survive her gunshot wound.
A spokesman for Mayor Muriel Bowser says the mayor has remained in constant contact with Police Chief Cathy Lanier as the shooting is investigated.
“The fact is it appears in the video that he was threatened with an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death, and at that point in time, he’s allowed or authorized to use deadly force”, Pemberton told the TV station.
