Fenerbahçe player attacked by armed assailants
Fenerbahce have announced their Turkey worldwide midfielder Mehmet Topal survived his auto being shot at on Tuesday in what the club termed a “terrorist attack”. Thankfully he was saved by his bulletproof windscreen.
“This is a terrorist attack”, the club said, strongly condemning the incident.
“Our player has luckily escaped injury thanks to his car’s bullet resistant feature”, a written statement released on the website of the club said.
It’s not the first firearm related attack that Fenerbahce has suffered. The driver was hit in the face and hospitalized.
It is the second time the club has been the victim of such an attack in four months, after the team bus was shot at following a game against Rizespor back in April.
Topal was travelling home from the club’s training facility when unknown assailants opened fire on his auto in the Sancaktepe neighbourhood on the Asian side of Istanbul, Fenerbahce said in a statement.
The following Tweet was sent out by Federation Internationale de Football Association Pro, the union for soccer players across the world, showing the damage done to Topal’s vehicle.
Former Manchester United players Robin van Persie, Nani and ex-Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles are current squad members.
