Berkeley: School bus crash on I-80 injures several students
The California Highway Patrol says a crash involving a school bus has left at least 12 children with minor injuries.
The location’s rural nature provides no vehicular access, including to emergency vehicles, so CHP helicopter H-32 responded, arriving overhead in about 10 minutes, and landing in a field east of the injured party, officials said. The CHP said at least four other vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened around 10 a.m.at the Ashby Avenue exit. Traffic backed up for miles near the I-238 junction, according to the CHP.
As of Monday afternoon, CHP was still looking for the hit and run driver with a damaged truck. Other children were shuttled back to the Berkeley camp on a replacement bus that came to the scene.
In an email to parents, the camp directors said that as a precaution “a number” of children were taken to hospitals for First Aid care.
“Those kids are going to get picked up here and have a quiet day camp”, he said.
Broken-off parts of the pickup remained at the site of the collision, CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.
The CHP slowly reopened lanes and by 8:23 a.m., all lanes were open and the traffic alert was cancelled.
