Obama says GOP opposing Iran deal over politics, not merits
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) declared the Iran deal’s inspections regime is “not anywhere, anytime, but with lots of holes in it” in a statement on Monday, a portion of which was broadcast on Monday’s broadcast of “CNN Newsroom”. Senator Claire McCaskill is from Missouri and belongs to the Democratic Party – the same party as President Barack Obama. Tammy Baldwin announced that she would back the measure. “I didn’t say they are equivalent”, Obama said.
New York’s senior senator on Monday swatted away any reporters’ questions about the political ramifications of his decision, including any difficulty it might pose for him in trying to move up the ranks among Senate Democrats. He informed the White House of his decision Thursday afternoon.
– Secretary of State John Kerry is keeping pressure on members of Congress, like Pennsylvania Sen.
This marks one of the rare times that a state legislative leader has weighed in on a foreign policy issue – but one of several instances when that general rule was suspended by a matter bound up with the security of Israel. “We will need to work together to deal with Iran so why not prepare for it”, he added. Even with the handful of Democrats against the bill and Republican opposition, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has pledged “strong support” for the deal and Senate No. 2 Democrat Dick Durbin is whipping up support in the Senate.
Schumer’s decision last week caused an uproar as he usually lines up behind the president. This treaty involves more than just the removal of sanctions, which does require both houses; that’s why it is a treaty.
Congress has until mid-late September to decide whether to reject the sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions deal reached July 14 between Iran and six major powers.
Schumer signaled that he wouldn’t lobby hard against the accord.
Obama is taking his annual August vacation on Martha’s Vineyard Island in Massachusetts, but sat down for interviews with the two news organizations last week.
In the interview, Obama also spoke strongly of his critics in Congress, accusing Republicans lawmakers of opposing the deal over politics. “There is a plethora of explanations and reasons as to why the agreement weakens the United States“.
Schumer joins Democratic Reps.
Earlier Steve Israel, Nita Lowey, and Ted Deutch – announced that they would not support the deal. Michigan Rep. Sander Levin, however, has endorsed the deal. Opponents of the pact have targeted Schumer in campaign-style ads. And it will become a much more unsafe world.
The announcement came hours after the Senate left Washington for its recess.
