Burger King: Buzzfeed, One Direction spurred chicken fries
And now, Burger King is capitalizing on the spicy fast-food trend with its new “Fiery Chicken Fries”.
The spicy new companion to Burger King’s popular chicken fries took a year to develop, and is coated with a super-spicy breading of cayenne and black pepper.
The company pointed to a mention in a Buzzfeed post and a tweet by a One Direction member for generating conversation about chicken fries. Burger King’s sales are heating up thanks to to the brand’s famous Chicken Fries. “Think I just ate my body weight in chicken fries and sides owwwwww”.
Hirschhorn acknowledged Payne may have meant to type “chicken [and] fries”, as opposed to “chicken fries”. The return of chicken fries as a limited-time offer last summer was successful enough that Burger King added them to its permanent menu this March.
The fiery fries, which could cost $2.98 for nine pieces, are available while supplies last. The retweets allowed for the tweet to be divorced from context, leading to potential free advertising for Chicken Fries, even as Payne stuffed himself with KFC. In July, the company said that Chicken Fries helped drive second quarter same-store sales growth of 6.7 percent.
And for those who want to temper the burn even more, the Fiery Chicken Fries package has a built-in holder for a cup of ranch or honey mustard sauce. In addition to the King and Subservient Chicken characters, it has resurrected its Big King sandwich and Yumbo ham sandwich.
