Director defends ‘Straight Outta Compton’ accuracy
To coincide with the release of the N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton, the headphones company created a “Straight Outta” generator that is taking the internet by storm.
Hawkins, 26, and Mitchell, 28, had to bulk up to play Dre and Eazy, which required a 4,000-calorie-a-day diet, as well as boxing and fight training months before the shoot. “You know, there’s a lot of entertainment that we’ve gotten off the N.W.A. family tree and not known, and here’s a way to show people where it all comes from”. But he acknowledged in an interview at the movie’s premiere Monday night that notable moments from N.W.A.’s history aren’t in the film.
Producer and entrepreneur Dr Dre and rapper turned actor Ice Cube, as well as MC Ren and DJ Yella, all made appearances at the premiere of Straight Outta Compton, a film about the group’s emergence on the hip hop scene in the 1980s. With Dre’s beats as a backdrop, Cube ditched the boastful battle raps that were in style at the time and started writing about what they witnessed in their daily lives: Gang-bangers and police who seemed to consider all young black men suspicious.
Despite the track’s success, Ice Cube recalled a conversation he’d had with N.W.A member Eazy-E. Did you ever imagine one day you’d be directing the NWA bio-pic? “The film exhibits the why, not simply the where-when, however why did we do this type of music”. I think it’s critical to note that people are not entitled to give.
“It’s never going to change….” I’m gonna keep it all-the-way 1,000 with you, seriously. It’s really just about making sure they understood how important the group was and what they went through. 2000s groups such as Little Brother, Odd Future, and Boyz N Da Hood have also had problems with emphasized solo careers and creative differences.
Attendees gathered at the Florence Gould Hall in NYC to preview the film starring new comers Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, and O’Shea Jackson, Jr.
Director F. Gary Gray has won acclaim for the film, but he’s giving a lot of the credit to Universal, which bankrolled the almost 30 million dollar project.
